SEO is the foundation
A portfolio still needs crawlable URLs, useful page titles, internal links, fast pages, accessible markup, and content written for people. These fundamentals help a recruiter, a search engine, and an AI-assisted browser understand the same page.
Google's Search Essentials are a useful baseline for the technical and content fundamentals.
AEO adds an answer test
AEO asks whether a page answers a specific question clearly enough to be retrieved, extracted, and cited. The practical test is not a magic score. It is whether the page has a direct answer, clear headings, useful evidence, author context, and a route to deeper proof.
- Lead with the answer.
- Use headings that match natural questions.
- Make each important claim understandable on its own.
- Give the reader a reason to continue beyond the first paragraph.
Use firsthand proof
A portfolio can demonstrate authority without publishing private analytics or provider results. I built the brand sentiment reporting project as a separate observatory that collects page and answer observations, preserves their provenance, and routes proposed changes through human review before release.
The public page explains the method and the work. Operational payloads, unpublished citation results, costs, and database records stay in the private observatory. That separation keeps the claim honest while giving the reader a concrete project to inspect.
What this page has actually tested
The AEO Growth Loop compared this control topic with this Variant B using the same ten Exa prompts. Both pages returned successfully and the latest full-prompt run found the target page in 0 of 10 prompt result sets for each arm.
Variant B was not shown to be the winner. The result confirms a readable, testable pageānot a guaranteed citation, ranking improvement, or failure of the page itself.
That distinction matters: the next iteration changes one content element only, keeps the control frozen, and repeats the same paired measurement so the result can be interpreted rather than guessed.
SEO and AEO do different jobs
The page can serve both audiences when the distinction is explicit. SEO helps someone find the page. AEO helps an answer system select a useful passage from it.
| Question | SEO | AEO |
|---|---|---|
| Page job | Help the right reader discover the page | Help the reader understand the answer |
| Page pattern | Relevant title, structure, links, and depth | Direct answer, question-led headings, and extractable sections |
| Reader needs | A clear reason to click | A clear claim with context and sources |
| Responsible proof | Useful work and qualified visits | Authorship, sources, method, and attributable claims |
Improve one page, then test the change
The public reader should see one clear page. The experiment can still compare an unchanged control with a focused variant behind the scenes. Keep the question, provider, prompt set, and measurement window consistent so the structure change is the main difference.
If a sentence only exists to satisfy a crawler, it probably does not belong on the page. Make the page more precise for the person first.
Keep the two goals distinct
Discovery and answer quality are related, but they are not the same job. A page can be easy to find and still be hard to understand. It can also answer a question clearly while remaining difficult to discover. Write and review both layers deliberately.
For a fair comparison, keep the original control, use the same fixed prompt set, record the provider and date, and report the denominator. A later result may inform the next decision, but it should not be presented as proof of a durable ranking or citation change from one run.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between SEO and AEO for a personal portfolio?
SEO makes a portfolio easier to discover in search. AEO makes a clear answer easier for an answer engine to retrieve, understand, and cite. A strong portfolio needs both.
Should a personal portfolio use SEO and AEO together?
Yes. SEO supports crawlability, relevance, and qualified visits, while AEO adds direct answers, question-led structure, and attributable context.
What evidence can a portfolio publish about AEO?
Publish firsthand work, sources, authorship, and method. Keep private provider payloads and unpublished performance measurements in the observatory.
How can a portfolio make an AEO page easier to cite?
Lead with a concise answer, use headings that match natural questions, state claims clearly, identify the author and date, cite useful sources, and link the page to related work.
